Recanto

Recanto is a Portuguese word. It means corner, nook, hiding place.

À propos de

Recanto houses my art: paintings, words, and soon, photographs. It’s an online gallery and shop. Built to hold what I make. And if something speaks to you, for you to give it a new home.

Meet the artist

Melinda Yeoh is a Penang-born, Porto-based abstract artist and writer.

Art for me starts with life itself, not just on the paper.

“My earlier works in 2021 were intricate line drawings, but as I loosened up, I began exploring looser brushstrokes and a freer way of painting.

I paint mostly with acrylic gouache—my current favourite! But, I do incorporate other mediums when my painting vision calls for it. My abstract work began as a way to liberate my creative expression. And to communicate messages through visuals.

Today, I’m still most interested in how crafting a piece makes me feel. Through my work, I invite you to slow down, notice the beauty in everyday moments, and perhaps see part of your own story reflected too. May it bring inspiration, comfort, and a sense of peace to your space."

Here's my story

As the only child in the family with no siblings to play with, my late mother would buy me books to read and art books to keep me occupied.

Coming from the maternal side of the family where different ones would paint, draw, play the guitar, sew, and do arts & crafts—I didn’t realise I was being nurtured by this creative environment.

Though always drawn to art and words, I ignored this artistic path, and chose safer careers for over two decades.

It was when I went through a tough period in my life: family, health, and work, that I found solace through writing, drawing and painting. And with life’s inevitable ups and downs, I continue to find rest and connection through making art.
